Abstract


Nowadays the concept of soft skill has been developed in education due to the important role and function of soft skill in reaching the career and society life to support someone’s success. The ability to communicate with other people like ordinator, sub-ordinator, staff, among employees, buyers, customers as one component of soft skill. Moreover, the success of employees and officers is determined by their soft skill by 85%. This research is aimed to analyse the Accounting students’ ability in Semarang State Polytechnic in communicating chronological information to promote the products they usually consume in daily life. Many similar products are sold in the market, but each product has something special. This research belongs to qualitative descriptive style, i.e. the description of the Accounting students’ ability in Semarang State Polytechnic in communicating chronological information to promote the products. The purposive sampling is used as the sampling technique. The respondents cover 24 students in D4 Computerised Accounting Study Programme in semester VI who have got the lecture of “English for Academic Purposes” (EAP), and the material of Descriptive Paragraph. The data tends to be primary and qualitative directly coming from the students. The students’ ability relates to the oral skill and written skill in communicating chronological information to promote the products. The data then covers the Descriptive Paragraph coming from the students’ oral test and the students’ written test. The results showed that there are 5 paragraphs or 20,83% of paragraphs that can fulfill the criteria of the good Descriptive Paragraph by having five components of “topic sentence, supporting sentences, concluding sentence, unity, dan coherence”, whereas the other 19 paragraphs or 79,17% of paragraphs cannot fulfill the criteria of the good Descriptive Paragraph. The use of adjective either adjective of opinions or facts in all texts can fulfill the criteria of the good standard or 100% in good criteria. This enables the further research by having bigger samples from students in all study programmes of Accounting Department.
