Abstract


High order thinking skills such as reasoning skills, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation needs to be owned by students in learning mathematics at university level, not only remembering factual knowledge or simple application of various formulas or principles. It will assist students in carrying out its role in the community in which they have a role and a great responsibility in their environment (social life). Real problems that occur not only require a solution but it is more important is how the solution can be found with a solid foundation so that they will feel confident (affective aspects) in conveying their ideas to others and capable and responsible in implementing (psychomotor aspects). Therefore the role of mathematics as a means of communication from the reasoning (cognitive aspects) required. Students studying in the university are required not only technical skills (hard skills) but also has the power of reason (reasoning), are able to communicate, as well as the mental attitude, personality, and a certain wisdom (soft skills) so that they have comprehensive knowledge and different from individuals who do not have higher education to solve the problems in the real world (society). Thus the learning of mathematics at university should be regulated and directed in an effort to develop students' social lives.
